Kauai is known for its pristine beaches, and the shorelines in Wailua
are no exception. Lydgate Beach Park, on the south side of the Wailua
River, behind the Aloha Beach Resort Kauai Complex, is calm pool
protected by a lava rock barrier. With a lifeguard on duty to watch
over the beach, Lydgate is an ideal spot for families, especially
those with young children. The park is also equipped with picnic
tables, grills, restrooms, and showers. Also located within the park
region is Kamalani Playground, a utopia of recreation for the keiki
that includes slides, swings, steps, tubes, passageways and
multi-leveled platforms for hours of fun. Lydgate Beach Park is
rarely over-crowded and alternate sites can be reached by following
the paved road until it branches out towards the see. Here, a second
park area with ample bikeways and walkways, additional picnic and rest
areas, and another access point to the beach.
Wailua Beach is part of the Wailua River State Park, in front of the
Coco Palms. Locals and tourists find it a relaxing spot perfect for
sunbathing and casual water activity. Surfers and bodyboarders come
out to the beach from time to time, but the waters are sometimes
treacherous and visitors are cautioned against entering the water
without a lifeguard present if the ocean isn’t calm.
Another great beach for sunbathing is Waipouli Beach County Park.
The reef area keeps most swimmers away, but that leaves the large
grassy area and narrow beach open for an ample amount of sunbathing
space.
