Princeville is named in honor of Prince Albert, the young son of Kamehameha IV and Queen Emma, who died two years into his short life. The 9,000 acres of land that make up Princeville have changed hands several times over the years. It was originally sugar and coffee plantation land owned by R.C. Wyllie until his death in 1865. Then the area was sold and used for cattle ranching until 1969 when Consolidated Gas and Oil of Honolulu bought Princeville and began the initial development that would create a utopian luxury spot on Kauai. In 1990, the Japanese consortium of Suntory, Mitsui, and Nippon Shinpan took over ownership of the property.

As Princeville has emerged as a planned luxury resort area, most of the accommodations in the area are high-priced hotels or condominium rentals.
One of the most exclusive hotels on Kauai, and the only one on the north shore, is the Princeville Hotel. Filled with lavishly decorated furnishings, the hotel is the ideal spot for a pampered vacation. All rooms have spacious sitting areas, king-size beds, in-room aromatherapy, and opulent bathrooms. The bathrooms, on top of the luxury of double vanities and deep immersion tubs (mini-spas also available), have a windows with a liquid crystal feature that allow guest to turn them on to frost the panes for privacy or leave them clear to enjoy the view outside. Mountain and garden view rooms start at $456; partial oveanview and oceanview rooms range from $595-695; junior suites are available for $820 and other suite rates run from $2,000-5,000. The Princeville Hotel has a swimming pool, hot tubs, a shuttle service, children’s activity center, and ample beach access on its grounds.
The Hanalei Bay Resort is a condo resort that has private units available for rent. One of the unique features here is the free-form pool that includes a whirlpool grotto and 15-foot cascading waterfall for guests’ enjoyment. There are 8 tennis courts on site and a pro shop that schedules clinics for men and women. Amenities included in rooms are TV, phone, air conditioning, laundry facilities, and full kitchens in the suites. One-bedroom suites run $185, $215-240 for studios, and $350-390 for suites. Daily cultural activities are also scheduled so that visitors can immerse themselves fully in the culture of the islands.
Condo rentals are big in Princeville and come in a variety of prices. Marc Resorts Hawaii manages three condos in the area: the Puu Poa, with $500 units that include two-bedrooms and two baths with complete kitchen for up to six people; the Pali Ke Kua with one- or two-bedroom suites from $270-450; and the Hale Moi cottages which one-bedroom units with kitchens for $220-250. The Cliffs at Princeville have a pool with spa, putting green, volleyball courts, tennis courts, a recreation room, and laundry facilities available for guests to use. Units here are spacious and come with full baths and complete kitchens. One-bedroom suites run $200-225 and lofts are $230-250 a night.
